Beware the Gerrymander!

Ever hear the story of the Gerrymander? It's a strange beast, with a long neck, a forked tongue, wings and claws! And it's the size of twelve New England towns.

It all started in 1812 with Elbridge Gerry and Gilbert Stuart. After Gerry's party created an odd shaped election district Stuart saw a map of it in the paper. A painter, Stuart decorated the map with a face, wings and claws and thought it looked like a salamander. An editor replied that it should be called a Gerrymander, after Elbridge Gerry.

The Gerrymander election district contained many towns in our stomping ground, places where a few of our exploration locations reside! The towns are Chelsea, Lynn, Marblehead, Salem, Lynnfield, Danvers, Middletown, Andover, Methuen, Haverhill, Amesbury and Salisbury.

Gerrymander means to create an election district which favors the dominant political party. So much for democracy.
