Alone. In the woods. In the dark. Spooky enough? Try being near an insane asylum. We like horror movies . . so let's thow in over 10,000 dead bodies buried in the forest with small silver wreaths with crosses in the middle as the only reminder that they ever lived. Walking through the woods, in the dark, you trip on something. Looking down you see a rusty cross. Looking around you see more small rusty crosses, hundreds of them. Some buried by leaves and pine needles so deep you can barely see them.

Our first visit to this "cemetery" was in the evening. The sun was setting, fast. When we finally came upon the cemetery it was black. We knew the markers were in the woods, so into the woods we went. We spied one of the markers with our small flashlight. We tripped on them, we tried to avoid them, they were everywhere!

Buried in a pine box dressed in a white rob lay thousands of former patients. All but 5 known have a small metal wreath with a cross in the center to mark their final resting place. A couple lucky bodies have a stone, with a name on it. We stumbled upon one that night, toppled over. We put it back in place.

We left for the night, it was too dark to see much and tripping over the hundreds of markers got old. We returned a few days later to see the woods in the light of day. We recognized the area we walked through in the dark of night covered with markers. The stone we put back together sat in the middle of the woods. A short distance away a stone cross marked another mans grave. Someone had left a dime on it, a curious tradition. The hospital has served to treat mental patients, drunks, addicts, TB, Polio and other things. There are over 9,000 recorded names in the cemetery's register dating back to 1891. The hospital has been operating since 1854, those who passed away between those years have gone unrecorded.
