The Creepies
In 1941 the Navy ran out of room in Hingham at their ammunition depot, now Bare Cove Park. They
started work on an annex, called The Creepies by some locals. It was connected to a rail spur
east of Nantasket and had a rail yard that could fit 225 freight cars! In 1943 a second track
between the two areas that had been unused was reinstalled for exclusive use of munitions
trains. The rails can still be seen in the creepies, among the ruins of the buildings.
From 1941 until 1965 the Navy used the site, including over 130 bunkers, for
munitions storage, mine production and production of rocket engines. Several
areas are now called the "Burning Ground" where unexploded munitions were
burnt. In 1967 the Navy gave most of the land to the state, making it a state
park. From 1968 until 1971 the Army used the Navy's land to conduct research
and development. In 1971 the Navy gave what land it still held to the Army
who used it for training and vehicle maintenance. In 1985 the Army gave all
but 125 acres to the state.
If you want to walk into the middle of the woods on a snowy day to find an
abandoned army base, then your dream can come true at the creepies!
